What is Caudal Regression Syndrome?

Caudal Regression Syndrome, also known as caudal dysgenesis syndrome, caudal dysplasia sequence, caudal regression sequence, sacral agenesis, and sacral defect with anterior meningocele.

Caudal regression syndrome is a disorder in which half body formation in the mother’s stomach. There is no abnormality of upper side body formation, but lower side hips, legs, tailbone, and many different organs in the lower side is not developed.

Bernard Duhamel was the first to describe this syndrome in 1960 at the time publish a paper at the British Association of Pediatric Surgeons.

In this congenital abnormality disorder, some parts of the spinal cord are not developed or missing—this type of disarrangement of the spinal cord impact spinal cord function. The most affected area started from coccyx to sacral agenesis.

The severity of this syndrome is unpredictable because if any organ is not developing properly, then it directly or indirectly impacts our body.

This disorder is very rare estimate 1 or 2 affects every 100,000 newborn babies.

According to a study by a researcher, 40% to 50% of CRS Patients are burn along with anorectal malformation.

Cause of the Caudal Regression Syndrome

There is no specific cause of this disease; different categories of people are suffering from this problem.

Many causes are come out at the time of investigation of different cases.

According to the researcher, there are mainly four categories of a patient are suffer this types of disease.

Maternal diabetic

Scientists found that 250% chances of affected babies burn from highly diabetic mothers in a normal population.

One study by the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Japan is found that 8-16% of affected children are burning from diabetic mothers.

So there is not any strong evidence to say a highly diabetic mother burns an abnormal child. Still, many laboratories are performing the test to know more about this syndrome.

But if you suffer from diabetics and planning for babies or already pregnant, then you inform your doctor.

Genetic disorder

In the world, many mothers are birth physically challenge baby due to some genetic problem, but the next child is healthy.

To know the pathobiology of CRS, many scientists are performing many tests in human cells and mice.

They grow the cell artificially and targeted retinoic acid and its derivative. Which is a growth hormone, and they observe disturbances of retinoic acid formation leads to abnormal embryonic cell migration and differentiation and many other CRS-related problems.

Our suggestion is if any genetic abnormality people are present then must consult with your doctor.

Hypoperfusion

Some Researchers logically think that the formation of the artery in the abdomen is defections, so the blood supply to the lower side is less and the development of organs are hampers. There is no proof like that happen; it’s just logic of may happen.

How to know the criticality of the Caudal Regression syndrome?

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is helping to identify abnormalities related to CRS patients.

The syndrome is not treated, but if we know this syndrome at the yearly stage, there is the chance of reducing the severity.

We can evaluate the status of the spine with the help of an MRI scan

Type of syndrome

Renshaw classified the CRS on the basis of defects and joints of bone. Type 1, Type 2, and Type 3 all three have common problems seen e, I Sacrum is undeveloped In the fetus of the mother.

Type 1

It is known as one side of the Sacrum partially or fully undeveloped in the fetus at the time of growth of the embryo.

Type 2

In this condition, the total sacral is not developed and the ilia strongly attached to the outer side of the lower vertebra.

Type 3

Some parts of the lumbar and total sacral are not developed, and iliac amphiarthrosis.

Type 4

Two legs are joined by the soft tissue.

Type 5

In this condition, lower leg bones are joined by each other.

This type of condition is also known as sirenomelia, and this is also classified into seven types.

Treatment of Caudal Regression Syndrome

Caudal Regression Syndrome has not any specific treatment. It varies from patient to patient and type to type.

Single doctors have not capable of treatment this CRS disease. Neurosurgeons, kidney specialists, cardiologists, orthopedists, urologists, neurologists, and other medical person help in the treatment of the CRS.

In some cases, surgeons are required for the treatment of CRS, a variety of abnormalities are seen in CRS disease, so there is no common treatment prescribed by the doctor.

The doctor or surgeon is starting treatment after seeing the patient’s MRI scan report, and the time doctor prescribes some anticholinergic medicine for urological abnormality.

Conclusion

Some of the diseases are so serious and incurable, but doctors and scientists are trying to give some relaxation to a patient and reduce some pain of the patients.

And patient and family are confident to live in life with some positive energy. I will see one beautiful lady on social media, she is suffering from caudal Regression syndrome, and her name is Maddie Teagarden from the USA.

According to WHO 450 milions of people are affected different types of syndrome which are affetcted brain and neurones and many other essential organs.
